JPEG 2000 is a wavelet-based image compression standard (ISO specification (ISO/IEC 15444)). It was created by the Joint Photographic Experts Group committee with the intention of superseding their original discrete cosine transform-based JPEG standard. Common filename extensions include .jp2 and .j2c, while the MIME type is image/jp2.

Although the JPEG 2000 standard format does not include geocoding, it does allow for extra information to be inserted within the file. So GeoJPEG2000 or GeoJP2 is a JPEG2000-File enhanced with extra geocoding information

Mapping Science Inc, an ESRI Business Partner, defined GeoJP2 with a standard set of tags for georeferencing. GeoJP2™ is a trademark of Mapping Science, Inc. The GeoJP2™ format is the intellectual property of Mapping Science, Inc.
